African American Studies, with a primary field in English
Charita Gainey-O’Toole is a doctoral student in the department of African and African American Studies. She received her B.A. in English and Africana Studies from Cornell University in 2004. Before entering graduate school, she served as a middle and high school teacher under the New York City Teaching Fellowship. Charita’s scholarly interests include African American poetry, intertexuality, and memory studies. Her most recent research examines representations of Phillis Wheatley in the Anglo-American literary imagination.
